The Transdisciplinary Institute in Applied Data Sciences (TRIADS) invites students to apply for their graduate student fellowship program. These fellows obtain experience teaching, as well as networking with an interdisciplinary set of scholars who use innovative methods to research pressing societal problems.
Benefits to Students: There are two options for becoming a TRIADS fellow. First, TRIADS can cover 50% of the funding for Graduate Fellows for the year (i.e., one semester worth of support). Some programs may count this fellowship and associated instructional opportunities as a Mentored Teaching Experience (MTE). Second, TRIADS can pay you $20/hour for your time. Regardless, the fellowship is a valuable educational opportunity for students to build their skills, experience, and professional network.
Student expectations: Graduate Fellows will be expected to spend roughly 3 hours a week on TRIADS service-related activities (e.g., assisting with interdisciplinary networking events for graduate students) and roughly 7 hours a week on TRIADS teaching-related activities (e.g., leading and preparing a methods workshop or short course). Click here to see examples of our past training workshops. The maximum time spent in this role will be 10 hours per week for one semester. However, the fellows will have access to the space, mentoring activities, and other resources associated with TRIADS for the entire academic year.
Mentorship provided: The TRIADS leadership group (led by Jacob Montgomery in Political Science and Tammy English in Psychological and Brain Sciences) will provide mentorship to the graduate fellows. They will work closely with the fellows to develop their courses, several of which will be based on the Carpentries framework (https://carpentries.org/). Fellows can participate in all workshops to further build their own skills. TRIADS will also provide fellows with office space, basic computer equipment, and professional development opportunities.
Application process and deadline: Applicants must submit a cover letter, CV, and letter of support from their department and/or principal investigator describing why they are well-suited for this program. Your cover letter should (a) indicate what kinds of courses you would want to lead, (b) briefly describe any previous teaching/MTE experience, and (c) indicate which fellowship option you prefer (hourly compensation or graduate funding). TRIADS requires a letter of support to ensure participation is consistent with students’ obligations and that they have the support of their department and/or mentor(s).
