Building Teams, Finding Solutions
In its first year, TRIADS laid the groundwork for innovative collaborations that address our world's most pressing social issues. In Year Two, our invitation to collaborate extends beyond WashU's campus to the broader St. Louis community. Here's the latest on what we're creating together:

TRIADS Seed Grant Program
The TRIADS Seed Grant Program aims to support focused transdisciplinary teams pursuing important research to address societal problems. The first 10 Seed Grant teams have begun their work, and a new round of applications will open soon.
To dig deeper into areas of shared research interest, TRIADS has organized five Nexus Teams that will unite Washington University faculty to study pressing social issues.
Mobile Assessment and Intervention Network (MAIN):
- Directors: Tammy English and Hannah Szlyk
- Goal: To facilitate connections between researchers interested in mobile data applications and methodologies, and promote conversations around relevant funding opportunities.
Geospatial Public Health:
- Directors: Caitlin McMurtry and Alex Bradley
- Goal: Exploring the intersections between environment and public health, utilizing geospatial data.
Technology, Equity, and Justice:
- Directors: Neal Patwari, Ted Enamorado, and Raven Maragh-Lloyd
- Goal: To initiate discussions with faculty members engaged in research at the intersection of technology, equity, and justice on and beyond Washington University's campus. A secondary goal is to establish a platform that fosters connections among faculty members who share research interests within the field. By doing so, we aim to support research projects that are eligible for grants and other awards and align with the transdisciplinary nature of TRIADS.
AI & Society:
- Directors: Keith Schnakenberg and Frank Lovett
- Goal: Exploring fairness in AI systems, biases in complex models, algorithmic mediation of human communications, and “human in the loop” computation.
Messy Data:
- Directors: Ana Babus and Christopher Lucas
- Goal: Topics include measurement of latent concepts in complex data, the historical drift of concepts in large corpora, symbolic representation in political imagery, or measuring emotional states from audio.
